DIY Febreze Substitute

Though I do love a fresh smelling home, I’m always concerned about the overly chemical smells some deodorizers leave in their wake. The artificial fragrances can be overwhelming and, in the long run, may not be the healthiest choice for my family and pets.

I went looking for a few different DIY options that would help me use more natural products to achieve the same effect. After some research and experimentation, here’s what I found!

1. DIY Fabric Refresher with Essential Oils

This natural option is effective and can be customized with your favorite scents.

  • Ingredients:
    • 1 cup water
    • 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol or vodka
    • 10-15 drops of your preferred essential oil (e.g., lavender, lemon)
    • Optional: 1 tablespoon baking soda for extra odour-fighting power

Instructions:

  1. Combine the water, rubbing alcohol (or vodka), and essential oils in a spray bottle.
  2. If using baking soda, add it to the mixture.  Secure the top of the spray bottle and shake well to combine all ingredients.  Lightly mist your fabrics, couches, or pillows to freshen them.

Tips for Your DIY Freshener

  • Use distilled water: to avoid impurities from tap water.
  • Witch hazel or vodka: can also be used as a substitute for rubbing alcohol to help the scent and water mix.
  • Shake well: before each use to ensure the ingredients are properly dispersed.
  • Adjust the amount of essential oil: based on your preference for a stronger or lighter scent.

3. Baking Soda Air Freshener This is a recipe I have used in the bathroom for some extra oomph!

By opting for these natural alternatives, I not only keep my home smelling fresh but can also feel good about the choices I’m making for the environment and my health. Embracing these DIY methods has truly transformed my approach to home fragrance!
