Weird Places We Need to Clean
When it comes to cleaning our homes, many of us focus on the obvious areas like floors, countertops, and bathrooms. However, there are plenty of weird and often overlooked spots that collect dust, dirt, and germs. Here’s a guide to those hidden cleaning hot spots you might not think about regularly.
1. Ceiling Fan Blades
Ceiling fans can accumulate a SURPRISING amount of dust. When the fan is in motion, it can spew dust and allergens all through the room. To clean, turn off the fan and use a microfiber cloth or a specialized fan duster to wipe the blades. Don’t forget to clean the bulbs and shades too!
2. Baseboards
Baseboards can sometimes go unnoticed during our regular cleaning routines. Dust, dirt and pet hair can build up along these edges. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment or a damp cloth to gently wipe them down. This small task can make a huge difference in your home’s overall cleanliness.
3. Behind Appliances
Most of us don’t think to move appliances like the refrigerator, oven or washing machine for cleaning. But these areas can harbour dust, crumbs, and even mould. Pull out appliances periodically and clean the floor and the walls behind them.
4. Air Vents and HVAC Filters
Air vents, HVAC and heat pump filters can trap dust, pet dander and allergens, affecting indoor air quality. Removing and cleaning or replacing filters every few months can improve airflow and maintain a healthier living space. Wipe down the vents with a damp cloth to grab any remaining dust.
5. Doors and Knobs
While we wash our hands regularly, we sometimes forget to clean the surfaces we touch many times a day. Door knobs, handles and the doors themselves can be breeding grounds for bacteria. Use disinfectant wipes or spray to clean these surfaces regularly.
6. Inside the Microwave
Food spills in the microwave can harden and become nasty. Regularly wipe down the inside surfaces, including the ceiling, as splatters can go everywhere during cooking. For a deeper clean, place a bowl of water with lemon juice inside and microwave it for a few minutes, then wipe down the interior.
7. Light Switches
Light switches are another frequently touched surface that can harbour germs. Use a disinfectant wipe or spray and a cloth to keep them clean. This quick task can also help keeping a healthier home.
8. Under Rugs and Furniture
Rugs and large pieces of furniture can hide a significant amount of dust and dirt. In our home, it’s dust rhinos from our Bernese Mountain Dog. Move and vacuum underneath rugs and clean the surfaces under larger furniture pieces to ensure no dust bunnies are left lurking.
9. Cushions/Upholstery
Cushions and upholstery can accumulate dust mites and allergens over time. Vacuum under couches and chairs regularly and consider steam cleaning or using a professional cleaning service for deeper cleans. We have a slipcovered couch, armchair and ottoman. They make it so easy to launder, even though they are a bit of a bitch to put back on the sectional!
10. Shower Curtain Liners
Shower curtain liners can encourage mould and mildew because of the constant moisture exposure. Wash your shower liner in the washing machine periodically, or wipe it down with a mildew-removing solution that’s safe for fabric.
11. Shower Curtain Rod
Cleaning your shower curtain rod is an often overlooked part of cleaning your bathroom. Over time, shower curtain rods can accumulate soap scum, mildew and grime, which not only look bad but can also harbour bacteria.
Cleaning these weird places in your home can help keep your home clean and healthy. Adding these tasks to your regular cleaning schedule can make a huge difference in maintaining a fresh and inviting living space. So grab your cleaning supplies and tackle those hidden spots—you’ll be glad you did!
